Let's talk about ten years from now and Sci-Fi....

The issue with speeding up Artemis and the Mars mission is not the science. It's the money. As long as NASA is funded by the HUD and other independent agencies subcommittee rather than defense, there will be a bias against NASA. If it is part of Defense appropriations bills, personnel doing work under R&D and procurement contracts in aerospace will simply shift form DoD contracts to NASA contracts with no change in  403(b) totals.

Let's talk about a new item in your grocery store....

Lab grown chicken sounds good, provided it has lab grown chicken fat. Beef is an even better candidate.  What is most important is that this technology can be used to grow proteins such as this in orbit, the Moon and Mars. Sheep and lamb, we will keep for the wool and goats for the milk. Pork should be lab grown and 3-D printed. What about eggs?

Let's talk about Artemis....

Sadly, because it is uncrewed, fewer people are paying attention to the mission as it continues its journey around the Moon. The beauty of the approach of the Mercury 7 was that they captured interest - and it turns out were key to the success of more than few missions. We get excited about heroes, not hardware.

Climate Scientist Answers Earth Questions From Twitter | Tech Support | ...

By Peter Kalmus.

Here are some options he does not include. Civil disobedience is like voting for real socialism. It won't work.

More babies who are brown, brilliant and ignored by the system.

Forget self-driving, lithium ion batteries and go to direct power through the roof deck, which also links to a central computer to operate vehicles - sometimes taking them to rail, sometimes driving direct, depending on congestion. System would also have grass on top of the roof (and solar, possible storm drainage) and transmit internet and electricity to homes. Use Thorium and other small scale reactors (like new Japanese models) to produce electricity.

Replace cows and pigs with cloned protein, fat and blood. Keep chickens and lamb and go ahead and fly. Warming should be slowed enough with these changes to not have to do everything. Produce Hydrogen through care based electrolysis produced in cars from roof deck power.

Create employee-owned employment which also handles finance, consumption, human and infrastructure services, including roads, using smart growth to locate homes near work.

Only oil needs to be edged out - or simply move toward plastics.

We are in a natural cold cycle once anthro-warming is taken care of. Do everything else and there is wiggle room.

You Will Not Return from a Trip to Mars the Same Person

By Astrum - which is mostly wrong. Here is the real story:

No one shows up at the gate to leave. Passage must, in part, be earned with colonists having to know how to use and fix some or all of the technologies that will be used in transit and the colony. Gravity will not be a problem.

Unless centrifugal gravity works out, with multiple starships linked in the same way as envisioned in the 1000 Planets model, the trip would be a fool's errand.  There is no way to store enough food for the journey. It will have to be grown, as it will be on Mars itself.

Colonists will probably have to become SpaceX employees living in a colony model before liftoff (and without much in the way of pay) - and likely with some work in orbital colonies as well. Orbital colonies will be necessary to subsidize the Mars colony - as most colonists who would be worth having would not be able to simply pay cash and go. Cash explorers would go to Earth Orbit or the Moon - although because of the smell, I doubt the Moon would be much of a tourist destination - although I am sure Elon will take their money.
